Rights Manager

Job Description:

The Rights Manager will represent titles from BenBella Books and its imprints, including Smart Pop and Matt Holt, for all domestic and international subsidiary rights, including but not limited to: audio, translations, subscriptions, fair usage, large-print, book-club inclusion and serial, reporting to the Deputy Publisher, Adrienne Lang

The Rights Manager will identify potential subsidiary rights opportunities and pitch potential licensees; work with territory coagents and individually to negotiate and sell rights; attend international and domestic book fairs; negotiate licensing agreements for digital and print use; and work with audio publishers to secure deals.

Specific training or job experience required includes:

  • Minimum of five years of Subsidiary Rights experience.
  • Proven track record in selling audio, translation, or other subsidiary rights.
  • Experience in preparing selling presentations, including pitch letters to coagents and licensees, and in preparing rights guides for book fairs
  • Should have relationships and contact with audio publishers, co-agencies, scouts, and UK/ANZ publishing houses

Skills required to perform this job include:

  • Ability to work on your own
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and superior organizational skills
  • A high-level understanding of how to prioritize and handle multiple projects
  • Familiarity with current rights-sales landscapes
  • Excellent at communicating and following up

This role is remote. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Marketing Assistant

Salary: $40,000

Job Description:

To support the marketing team in necessary tasks, including research, spreadsheet
management, proofing, website support, social media support, data entry, and various
other tasks.

Position will report to the Senior Marketing Director but will support the full marketing
team.

Remote Working Requirements:

  • Dedicated office space that can accommodate monitor, computer, printer, scanner
    (equipment provided by company if needed)
  • Reliable high-speed internet, hard-wired preferred
  • A home work environment as free of interruptions and distractions as possible
    given current public health circumstances

Further Description of Tasks:

  • Responsible for media and marketing research to support five book marketers
  • Responsible for spreadsheet management to support the department’s operations
  • Responsible for proofing marketing collateral and copy
  • Responsible for website support, updating listings and back-end data entry
    (WordPress and WooCommerce experience a plus, but not required; training will be
    provided)
  • Responsible for social media support (drafting captions, market research, etc.)

Required Qualities: highly organized, reliable, self-motivated, strong work-ethic; design
skills, WordPress knowledge, and enthusiasm for books and marketing are all pluses, but
not required.

Production Assistant

Salary: $40,000

Status: Entry-level, Full Time (Exempt)

Job Description:

The Production Assistant will work with the Production Department on reprint coordination, print quotations, copyright application, and miscellaneous production support for all BenBella imprints (~70–80 titles per year).

Responsibilities will include:

  • Processing orders for all reprints and tracking the progress through estimating, scheduling, printing, and shipping
  • Coordinating reprint text and cover changes and fielding prepress feedback from print partners
  • Archiving reprint corrections and working with print and digital team members on communicating corrections
  • Fielding frontlist and reprint print quote requests, compiling all print specifications for projects, and requesting and managing quote requests from print suppliers
  • Applying for and maintaining the record of all copyright applications for all titles
  • Applying for and tracking Cataloging-in-Publication data and communicating records to Production Editors
  • Miscellaneous production support and administrative tasks, including but not limited to: supporting audiobook and ebook quality assurance, scheduling outside vendors, and proofreading internal production materials

Book Cover Junior Designer

Salary: $40,000

Job Description:

Designing book collateral and promotional materials for BenBella and its imprints. The ideal candidate will have a 2 or 4-year design degree and/or 1–3 years trade book cover design experience with a strong individual portfolio showcasing original and innovative designs; versatile use of photography, illustration, color, and typography; and a sensitivity to target audiences.

The designer must be able to work on their own and in collaboration with the art director, editorial team, and production team and be sensitive to the marketing interests of BenBella and its distributor and authors. As an independent publisher, we pride ourselves on partnering closely with authors in all departments, including design, as this leads to more author investment in the success of the final book.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and typeset full cover mechanicals for printer submission.
  • Design front list covers, starting with 3–6 covers for the Matt Holt imprint per year with guidance from the art director and design team.
  • Design temporary front covers for title/audience testing.
  • Reformat covers for backlist reprints and audio formats.
  • Assist in file transfers for subsidiary cover licenses.
  • Producing a twice-yearly catalog promoting BenBella’s titles.
  • Design additional sales materials as needed, including art for retail book pages, PowerPoint presentations (4 per year), and promotional web/newsletter banners.
  • Maintaining a strong working knowledge of industry trends and best practices.
  • Participating in design and interdepartmental meetings.
  • Conducting research on available photography, art, and illustration for covers.

BenBella is a virtual company, so the successful candidate will work from home and will have some degree of flexibility in their schedule.

Desired Skills and Interests:

The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • Minimum 2 or 4-year design degree and/or 1–3 years trade book cover design experience. Non-fiction cover experience, particularly with business titles, is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and
  • Microsoft Office Suite (specifically PowerPoint, Word, and Excel)
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines for multiple ongoing projects.
  • Dependable, hardworking, and self-motivated in a remote office setup.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience packaging and prepping files for commercial print production.
  • Experience with photo-editing and compositing a plus.
  • Experience typesetting book or magazine interiors a plus.
