An astute first-person account of the UFC’s boom period as it carved out its place within the psyche of sports

Once dismissed as brutal fringe entertainment, the UFC has become one of the most valuable and influential forces in modern sports: a global business, a media machine, and a mirror held up to our appetites for violence, spectacle, authenticity, and story.

The Fight Game offers a rich, deeply informed look at the fighters, promoters, rivalries, media battles, broadcast gambles, and fateful, often absurd turns that shaped the sport. For curious outsiders, it answers the question at the heart of MMA’s unlikely ascent: Why do people watch this? Written as a collection of interlaced essays, this is not a simple corporate history or fan’s guide, but a vivid, nuanced, and character-driven work of sportswriting about what happens inside the Octagon, what happens around it, and why it all matters.

As a trusted voice of the sport, veteran combat sports writer Chuck Mindenhall brings twenty years of ringside observation and sharp cultural insight to the world of MMA. Chuck uses his trademark witticisms and a light-hearted tone to trace the UFC’s transformation from taboo curiosity to international phenomenon, exploring:

  • How the UFC evolved from “no holds barred” chaos into a regulated global sport
  • Why MMA is not mere brutality, but a complex sport practiced by highly trained athletes
  • How reality TV, social media, pay-per-view, and streaming helped fuel the sport’s ascent
  • Why figures like Dana White, Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, and Jon Jones became cultural forces
  • What MMA reveals about ambition, masculinity, violence, celebrity, and American entertainment

For longtime fight fans and curious outsiders alike, The Fight Game is an invitation into a world of intensity, contradiction, danger, and unlikely beauty—providing an elevated, often humorous, look at how the UFC went boom.
