E-book Help Guide

Should I purchase an EPUB or MOBI file?

For any titles published after October 2020, EPUB files are the only option (instructions below on how to get your EPUB file onto your Kindle device). However, if you are a Kindle user and want to read our older titles on a Kindle device or app, you may choose the MOBI option. If you want to read your ebook on any other e-reader device or app (e.g., Kobo, Nook, Adobe Digital Editions), please use the EPUB option.

How do I read my ebook on my Kindle or on a Kindle app?

If it’s an EPUB file…

The easiest way to make an EPUB file Kindle-friendly is by converting it to a MOBI file using an ebook management program like Calibre or Kindle Previewer 3. Full instructions on how to use this software can be found here

If the MOBI file size is under 50MB…

The easiest way to add a personal file to your Kindle account is to email it as an attachment to the email address associated with your Kindle device or app.

  1. Download the MOBI file to your computer.
  2. Attach the MOBI file to an email, send it to your Kindle’s email address (with any subject, and nothing in the body of the email), and it should appear on your Kindle shortly.

If the MOBI file size is over 50MB and you want to read on a Kindle device…

For files over 50MB you can’t send the file to your Kindle via email, but you can transfer the file to your device via USB cable.

  1. Download the MOBI file to your computer.
  2. Connect your Kindle to the computer: Use the cable that came with your Kindle, to connect the e-reader to the USB port of your computer. The Kindle should be visible as an external disc.
  3. Copy the files to the Kindle: Click on a Kindle disc image. Inside, you’ll see the folder named “documents.” Copy the file or files onto it.

If the MOBI file size is over 50MB and you want to read on a Kindle app on an iOS device (iPad or iPhone)…

  1. Download the MOBI file to your computer.
  2. Connect your iPad or iPhone to the computer: Use the USB cable to connect your iOS device to the computer. Open iTunes app if it doesn’t start automatically. When your device successfully connects to the computer, its icon will appear in the top left corner of the iTunes app.
  3. Copy the file to the relevant folder in iTunes: To find the folder holding the files from the Kindle for iOS app, click “Apps” in the sidebar on the left. On the right side, you’ll see an “Apps” section. Scroll down to reveal the “File Sharing” section. Underneath, you’ll find the list of apps. Select Kindle. To the right, you’ll see the files that rest inside Kindle for iOS app.
  4. Drag the file from the desktop to the field underneath “Kindle Documents” and drop it there.
  5. Wait for the upload to finish, click “Done” and disconnect the iPhone/iPad from the computer.

If the MOBI file size is over 50MB and you want to read on a Kindle app on an Android device…

Use a cloud storage app such as Dropbox or Google Drive to transfer the file.

  1. Download the MOBI file to your PC.
  2. Upload the file to your Dropbox account. You can do it via the web browser or the Dropbox desktop application.
  3. Use the Dropbox app on your Android device to open the file: If you don’t have the Dropbox app, you can download it from the Google Play Store. When you open Dropbox, locate the file. Tap the options icon.
  4. The menu will slide up from the bottom. Tap “Open with…” option, and select Kindle.
